Upcoming New York State Testing for 3rd-8th Grade Students

April 11, 2023

Gananda Families,

We are approaching the time of year where state testing is set to begin for our students in 3rd-8th grade. In the upcoming weeks there are tests scheduled for ELA, math, and science. It is our belief, and the Board of Education’s belief, that all students take the tests as presented to them. These tests provide valuable information for us as a district and help us to make informed instructional decisions to best support our students. Data from these tests is used to:

  • Examine longitudinal growth
  • Identify students in need of academic growth
  • Identify gaps in curriculum
  • Provide comparative data to benchmark and compare districts
  • Identify students for advanced studies
  • Identify areas for further staff development
  • Meet federal guidelines
  • Comply with NYS educational law

Grade 3-8 assessment data is NOT used for:

  • Evaluation of teachers
  • Decisions regarding promotion of students
  • Decisions regarding retention of students
  • Student transcripts

All students will take the tests using their Chromebook; there is no paper and pencil option. Gananda has been computer based for all 3-8 assessments since 2019. If a student refuses to take a test they will remain in the room with other students; they will not be relocated to another location.  They will be able to open a book and read.  If a student is absent or arrives late they will be provided a make-up date and time.

We ask that you support the district by encouraging your child(ren) to take the tests and ensure that they get a good night's sleep, are provided proper nutrition, and come to school with a positive attitude.

Sincerely,

Shawn Van Scoy, Ed.D

Superintendent, Gananda Central School
