Letter from Superintendent Dr. Van Scoy Addressing Inappropriate Language

April 26, 2022

Gananda Families and Staff,

Last Friday, April 22, 2022, there was a student at the high school level that used inappropriate and derogatory language which was captured and posted on social media. Since then, the district and high school administration have been working diligently to investigate the situation and gather information. Our students have rights and due process must be followed. At this time a temporary decision has been made, however, this is a student matter and there are privacy rights that must be followed.

The code of conduct clearly states that students may be subject to corrective action when they engage in behavior that is disorderly (physical/verbal/digital). Disorderly behavior includes using abusive language or gestures, including racial or ethnic remarks or inappropriate reference to sexual orientation. You need to know that we will continue this process to its conclusion, however, we will not be able to comment on the final outcome of this situation.

We strive for a safe and welcoming environment for all of our students. The beliefs and language used on Friday do not align with, and are not reflective of, the district’s beliefs or practices. These moments remind us that we still have work that needs to be done. These conversations are essential to ensuring we improve and succeed in making Gananda Central School District a place where all students can achieve success.

If you have specific questions, please contact your building principal or myself.
